The MIT ASO will be holding its 6th Annual Science and Technology Awards Banquet in April, 2009. Around 200 professionals and college students from the Boston area and from around the nation are expected to participate in this year’s event, which will honor Dr. Mostafa El-Sayed, Regents Professor in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Director of the Laser Dynamics Laboratory at Georgia Institute of Technology, and recipient of the 2007 US National Medal of Science. The program will start with an informal reception at 6pm followed by dinner and the presentation of awards at 7pm.

In addition to the Lifetime Achievement Award to be presented to Dr. El-Sayed, the event will include the presentation of a Young Professional Award, a Graduate Student Award, and an Undergraduate Student Award. The three awardees will be selected by a panel of distinguished judges from MIT, including Professor Munther Dahleh, Professor Ahmed Ghoniem, Professor Mujid Kazimi, Professor Nasser Rabbat, and Ms. Iman Kandil.

Previous award winners include Dr. Ahmed Zewail, recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and Professor at the California Institute of Technology, Dr. Huda Zoghbi, Professor of Pediatrics in Neurology and Neuroscience at the Baylor College of Medicine, and Dr. Charles Elachi, director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at NASA and vice president of the California Institute of Technology.

The ASO establishes the institution of these awards in hope of fostering a bold new vision of a scientifically inquisitive, technologically pioneering and knowledge empowered, Arab American community. The awards banquet links different generations of Arab and Arab-American science and technology specialists and presents a valuable opportunity for Arab and Arab-American students to interact with accomplished professionals from the community.
